http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2011586082_4dayschoolweek12m.html
In this article, the city of Klameth Falls, Oregon is considering making it a four day school week in order to save money. Officials have talked about the rough times in recent years: layoffs, increased class size and employee unions having to make concessions. They said it was unprecedented.
I view this as something that was inevitable. It is happening all across the country. I believe it is because America no longer makes anything, that we are a service based economy. If we don't make anything, we don't sell either. Thus, revenues have gone down and we have free trade agreements and our leaders to thank for it.

Poll: D.C. not listening
http://www2.hernandotoday.com/content/2010/feb/25/poll-dc-not-listening/
In this article by the Tampa Tribune, it states that 92% of people responding feel that the government is not listening to them. Both sides, democrats and republicans, blame each other for this.
This is a problem that has been going on for some time now. The health care reform that is being proposed is one that a majortity of Americans polled don't believe we can afford and they are not in favor of it. Yet, it is being predicted that it may be passed anyway.

In Passage of Jobs Measure, a Glimpse of Bipartisanship
In this New York Times article stated above, said that 5 Republicans voted with the Democrats to approve a $15 billion jobs package in the Senate. It went on to say that this was parting with the stance the Republicans had taken in the past in trying to stop the advance of Mr. Obama's programs.
I think that this is indeed refreshing that they can for once vote for something that can actually benefit the county without worrying who gets the credit. One can argue that the jobs program may be fleeting since the jobs are probably going to come in the way of improving roads or other areas of infrastructure. However, it is at least a change from the Republicans solution of constantly giving the wealthy more money back with no guarantee that they are going to do the intended thing of creating new, lasting jobs for Americans.

Polanski film debuts, Swiss vow no extradition yet
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9DQPEKO0&show_article=1
This article states that director Roman Polanski is not going to be extradited back to the United States from Switzerland concerning a rape case in the late 1960's until a legal matter concerning the case is settled in Los Angeles. He still remains under house arrest.
"When the question is still open, why should he be extradited?" Rudolf Wyss, the ministry's deputy director, told The Associated Press. "As long as the question is still open, our decision depends on that."
This is a very sensitive issue. Those on Mr. Polanski's side state that he has gone through enough while hiding in France all these years and for the time that he did serve in jail. They further state that even the victim feels that this matter should be dropped, so why pursue it any further?
On the opposing side there are many people, like comedian/talk show host Dennis Miller, that state if people would look into the case and see in detail what Polanski did, they would demand that he goes back and serve time in jail.
Actually, I can see both sides to this argument and quite frankly do not know what side to take on this. If the victim can forgive him and want to put all this behind her, then why not? Also, you can easily see the argument that this crime is so awful, time does not forgive Mr. Polanski's not serving a sentence. Tough call.

China suspends military exchanges with US
Sunday, January 31, 2010
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20100130/D9DI6A3G0.html
In this article, "China suspends military exchanges with US ," China is retaliating against the United States for the sale of military weapons to Taiwan. The retaliation comes in the form of sanctions against defense companies that do business with China. The article states that this is not the first time this has happened, but with China's increasing power and confidence the response could be a lot stronger.
China has long viewed Taiwan as a part of China and sees the U.S. arming it as a way of keeping it seperate from the mainland. The article stated "Beijing has threatened to invade the island if it ever declared its defacto independence."
China has a history of not helping us when it comes to cooperation in foreign affairs. They have not used their influence with Iran and North Korea when it comes to stopping them from getting nuclear weapons. The Chinese are still dragging their feet because of Iran being a major supplier of oil to them. One of many reasons, I imagine.I agree with the article when it says that this may be a test of President Obama's leadership. The U.S has to decide whether doing business with China is more important than the freedom of Taiwan which it is legally bound to protect.

NAFTA
A Free Market In Free Fall And You Have To Pay
http://www.jsonline.com/news/opinion/83679947.html
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal has written an article about the realities of the North America Free Trade Agreement signed under the Clinton administration.
The article states that NAFTA "Forces U.S. workers to compete with low-wage workers in countries that lack even minimal labor protections and encourages countries to compete for investment by reducing social regulations and environmental protection."
There are other points that the article covers and none of it seems to benefit the working class in the United States. That is why I am choosing this subject as the first paper that I want to write about.
