The New York Times published an article in 2008 about the gene that was found to connect nicotine addiction and lung cancer. The research found that the smokers who inherit this gene from both parents have an 80% chance of getting lung cancer than those who smoke but did not receive the gene from either parent. They have found that the gene makes smokers more dependant on smoking and less likely to quit. Researchers who found the gene disagreed on whether the variants increased the risk of lung cancer or did so indirectly by causing more to smoke.
It is hard for me to believe that there is such a huge percentage difference in people who are at chance for lung cancer with the gene and those who are not. Whether you smoke or not you are still at risk. Smoking is smoking no matter if you have a gene that makes you or not. Do you think that these genes will and do increase the chances of getting lung cancer?

If you smoke too much 'blame your genes' experts say

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8643803.stm
The BBC wrote an article on how researchers have found 3genetic mutations in genes that effects the number of cigarettes a person smokes a day. They have also found that several genes can dictate whether a person picks up smoking or not. In a study performed 2 years ago they found a single letter change to a genetic code that linked nicotine addiction and lung cancer. Still after finding this, researchers are still unsure of whether the variants in the genes drive people to smoke more or make them more susceptible to lung cancer. Researchers are hoping that with this knowledge people will continue to quit smoking.
In a way I feel that this article can persuade someone to make an excuse for why they smoke and to them may make it seem okay because they cannot help it. No matter if they found the gene that relates nicotine addiction and lung cancer, we all know that smoking leads to lung cancer regardless so why should a test to see if you have the gene effect whether you will quit smoking or not?

New York Times posted an article about Nebraska revising their law on abortion. The new law bans abortions later than 20 weeks after conception because at that point they state that the fetus can feel pain. It is sure to cause debates and outrages against the bill. It is the first law in the United States to restrict abortion for the cause of fetal pain. The law that it replaced and is similar to other states laws on abortion, prevent abortion after the fetus reaches viability or can live outside of the womb. Most found that at the earliest that is 22 weeks. The biggest issue is not that the timeline changed for abortion but the fact that it changed because of fetal pain. Fetal pain is the most intense unresovled debates amoung researches, on both sides of abortion. Nebraska also states in the law that there can be exceptions to this law if there is life threatening results of the mother.
From a non biased opinion, I think that the fetus would feel pain at 20 weeks. Although there is no possible way for researchers to conclude that but whose to say that they cannot? I think that their needs to be stricter laws on abortion in all states and I think Nebraska is the starting point in changing things concerned with abortion.

For Obese People, Prejudice in Plain Sight

What can we do to help this epidemic problem of obesity?
Obesity is an ongoing problem in America today and continues to grow as more and more fast food becomes availible. It is now getting to the point that people want to be accepted as fat and are happy and proud of themselves that they are. What some may not realize is all the health factors and problems that come with being overweight. But is it just fast food and laziness that has people growing heavier? Studies show that genetics can play a part in being overweight.

Disney Pulls ABC From Cablevision After Deal Fails

The New York Times posted an article today about how many new yorkers woke up this morning to find that ABC was taken off there cable. This occurred because of a contract negotiation failed with the Walt Disney Company. Many people who have had ABC taken from them are concerned that they wont be able to watch and access the Academy Awards. Now cablevision is trying to get customers to switch to their company so they can access the awards. Many are hoping the negotiation gets worked out before 8pm tonight.
I don't think that ABC should have been pulled for a miscommunication in the companies. It is a money issue between the companies and now people who are paying for the cable are being punished. Especially now, the day when the Academy Awards are on. It is not fair for the people to suffer and be put out when it is an issue with the companies.

An Apology With Echos of 12 Steps

In this article from the New York Times, it talks about the apology that Tiger Woods made to the nation. There has been talk that he is a sex addict but in his speech he does not once mention those words. Though by the way Tiger was talking it seemed he was using a 12-step program. First created by alcoholics anonymous. The article states that the very thought of someone getting addicted to sex can bring up jokes and laughs, so therefore one may seek a medical excuse for promiscuity.
I do not think that sex addiction is an excuse. I think just because he is famous it is a big controversy. I think thats what happens when rich and famous people travel away from their spouses. For those who get caught, it is always a big ordeal in the media.

Top Defense Officials Seek to End ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell'

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/03/us/politics/03military.html?scp=1&sq=gays%20military&st=cse
On February 2, 2010, The New York Times published an article about banding the policy "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military. The "don't ask, don't tell" policy allows men and women who are homosexual to serve in the military as long as they keep their sexual orientation a secret. Many officials agree that this policy forces the men and women to lie about who they are and think that it is a good idea to get rid of the policy. Though some officials had a very negative reaction and are disappointed in the idea and those who support it. Although the change will not take place anytime soon, there are a lot of issues to cover. Such as, Pentagon policies toward policies on benefits, base housing, fraternization, and misconduct.
I think it is a great idea to change the policy, although it might take a great deal of change on the other policies. Whether men or women are homosexuals, it does not effect the quality of their job. Times have changed greatly since that policy was formed and I believe the government should change with the times. I also agree that it is not right to make men and women lie about who they are, especially when a lot of them put their lives on the line for us.

Preschools Add Brush-and-Spit to Day

Preschools Add Brush-and-Spit to Day
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/education/29brush.html?ref=health
Today, The New York Times published an article about toothbrush time being added to the routine of preschoolers in Haverhill, Massachusetts. While many parents are pleased to hear this, others are not so happy. Many of the parents don't want other people touching their children's mouths and think that teaching a child to brush their teeth is the parent's job. Sherri Killins, commissioner of the Early Education and Care, states that, "poor dental care is the most common, chronic childhood ailment, and if not treated can result in pain, infection, and other devastating impacts on a child's health" and supports the idea fully. While other doctors who support the idea, are still worried about the underlying problems, like the spread of germs through the toothbrush.
Although poor dental care may be true in children, I think the best way around this problem is to teach the parent the correct way, not the child. At the beginning of this article it stated that some children while supposed to be brushing thier teeth were really, playing swords with them and rubbing them into the carpet. I know that it is not easy to prevent the spread of germs in a preschool but toothbrushes are not going to help. The children could easliy switch toothbrushes with each other, sharing saliva or get germs from the teacher trying to help brush their teeth. I think you would see better results with the dental care of children if the parents got more information on the correct way to brush their childrens teeth. I agree that it is a parent's job to teach their children and it is not meant for the public.
